Nasdaq to launch 23-hour trading schedule in December 2026
Nasdaq has announced plans to expand its trading hours to nearly 23 hours a day, five days a week, following approval of its core framework by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The initiative, aimed at increasing accessibility for international investors, includes a new Night Session running from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. ET.
Under the proposed schedule, the trading week would begin on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET and conclude on Friday at 8 p.m. ET. The exchange will implement a one-hour daily maintenance pause between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. ET to facilitate technical transitions. The core trading session from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET will remain the primary window for price discovery and official opening and closing crosses.
The transition is targeted for December 6, 2026, pending final regulatory alignment and the readiness of critical market infrastructure. Nasdaq noted that while the Night Session offers broader access, certain order types—such as unpriced market orders and specific auction orders—will not be available during these overnight hours. The move comes as foreign holdings in U.S. stocks reached $17 trillion in mid-2024.
