Nashville authorizes potential eminent domain to block DC Blox data center

The Nashville Metro Council has voted 27 to 5 to authorize the city to acquire a 23.49-acre property adjacent to the Nashville Zoo through negotiation or condemnation. The site is currently slated for a data center project by DC Blox. While the vote grants the city the option to use eminent domain, officials clarified that no negotiations have begun and the city must still prove a public need for the land in court.

In response to the city's efforts, DC Blox has filed a lawsuit in federal court. The company alleges that Nashville acted illegally by implementing zoning changes and a moratorium on new data centers after it had already secured the necessary permits. The dispute follows significant public opposition, including a petition with over 500,000 signatures and support from various public figures.

The conflict highlights a growing national tension regarding data center construction, specifically concerning high energy and water consumption, noise pollution, and the environmental impact of facilities supporting artificial intelligence.
