Nashville International Airport proposal to honor Dolly Parton
Following the death of country music icon Dolly Parton at age 80, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and Nashville Mayor Freddie O'Connell have expressed support for renaming Nashville International Airport in her honor.
The proposal follows a massive surge in an online petition, which has gathered over 170,000 signatures. The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority is expected to consider the request during a meeting on September 17. If approved by the Federal Aviation Administration, Parton would be the first woman to have a major American airport named after her.
In addition to the airport tribute, Parton's legacy is being honored through various means. A song she wrote, ‘My Place In History’, was buried in a time capsule at her Dollywood resort in 2015 and is scheduled to be unearthed on her 100th birthday in 2046. Regarding her estate, reports indicate that while a significant portion of her wealth will fund her various charitable causes, such as the Imagination Library, her extended family will be ‘taken care of for life’.
