Nashville prison emergency response delayed during Crystal Pike execution attempt

Emergency services were delayed for approximately 30 minutes at the Riverbend prison in Nashville following a report that inmate Crystal Pike survived an attempted execution. The delay occurred because the initial 911 call, received at 20:40 local time on September 30, was initially treated as a potential hoax.

According to recorded transcripts, the caller stated they were performing an execution using 10 grams of pentobarbital and that the individual had not yet died. Confusion ensued at the prison gates as officials provided conflicting information regarding whether the emergency was real. While one official claimed the signal was false, another insisted the case was legitimate and requested access for emergency teams.

Access was eventually granted at 21:11, with ambulances and fire crews entering the complex by 21:14. Pike, 50, was hospitalized after receiving two doses of pentobarbital. Although she was initially placed on a ventilator, she later regained consciousness, began speaking, and was subsequently discharged and returned to the women's prison, where she has been held for 30 years. Tennessee authorities have not yet determined the cause of the failed execution.
