Nashville SWAT officer decommissioned after fatal shooting
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred Saturday morning in Nashville. Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) SWAT officer Joshua Baney was decommissioned following the incident, in which he fatally shot 54-year-old Jason Sexton.
According to police reports, officers had been attempting to serve arrest warrants for Sexton since Friday. On Saturday, officers located Sexton in a vehicle on Cheshire Drive in northern Davidson County. Sexton was reportedly holding a sword and was involved in a standoff that included an argument with officers and the alleged detention of a woman in the vehicle.
Body camera footage indicates that Baney, a 12-year veteran of the MNPD, exited his vehicle and fired three shots at Sexton within 10 seconds of arriving at the scene. Sexton was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased. No officers were injured during the encounter. The TBI is acting as independent fact-finders to determine the circumstances of the shooting, with findings to be reviewed by District Attorney General Glenn Funk.
