Nigeria corruption trials: El-Rufai and Atiku Abubakar under scrutiny

Nigeria is seeing a surge in high-profile corruption proceedings involving former political leaders. In Kaduna, a forensic investigator from the Department of State Services, Segun Kayode, testified that former Governor Nasir El-Rufai and his associates allegedly earmarked $600,000 to bribe Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) officials and intermediaries. Kayode claimed forensic audio recordings captured discussions regarding efforts to frustrate investigations into Singularity and plans to liquidate the company in Nigeria and Mauritius.

Separately, the EFCC has reopened an investigation into former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar following a petition by former lawmaker Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma. The petition calls for a review of a 2006 investigation and a 2010 US Senate report.

In another case, former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika is facing trial for an alleged N2.8 billion contract fraud. A witness testified that Sirika allegedly imposed a German associate on the ministry to secure an Air Nigeria contract, which was later extended in a manner that violated due process.
