Nasopharyngeal cancer: Early warning signs and Italian statistics
Nasopharyngeal cancer, a rare type of cancer located in the upper throat behind the nose, is often diagnosed late due to its difficult-to-access location and easily overlooked symptoms. In Italy, approximately 400 people are diagnosed with this cancer annually, representing some of the highest rates in Europe.
Medical experts highlight that one-sided hearing loss can serve as a critical early warning sign. Other symptoms include persistent nasal congestion, frequent nosebleeds, and the appearance of new or growing lymph nodes on the neck. The disease primarily affects men, who are diagnosed at twice the rate of women, and most commonly impacts individuals between the ages of 40 and 50. Notably, 63 percent of the disease burden is concentrated in people under the age of 65.
Key risk factors identified include tobacco use and infection with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Discussions regarding research gaps and patient care were recently held in Rome by medical professionals and patient organizations.
