Nassau County ranks among most surveilled US counties

Nassau County has become one of the most heavily surveilled areas in the United States, according to data compiled by the activist group DeFlock. The county has more than 330 Flock Safety cameras mapped across over 3,200 miles of road, resulting in a camera density of approximately one every 9.5 miles.

This density places Nassau County within the top 100 counties in the nation for cameras per mile and within the top 3% of the most closely watched drivers in America. Flock Safety utilizes AI-powered cameras to scan and store information on passing vehicles, including license plates and vehicle characteristics such as dents or bumper stickers. This data is searchable by law enforcement agencies to track vehicle movements.

In comparison, neighboring Suffolk County has a lower density, with a few hundred cameras mapped across roughly 7,100 miles of road, or approximately one camera every 33 miles, ranking it within the top 500 counties nationwide.
