Nassau County transgender sports ban struck down by appeals court
A New York appeals court has overturned a Nassau County law that prohibited transgender athletes from participating in girls and women’s sports at county-owned athletic facilities. The unanimous ruling by a four-judge panel of the Appellate Division, Second Department, found that the local restrictions conflicted with New York’s statewide anti-discrimination protections, specifically the state Human Rights Law and Civil Rights Law.
The legal challenge was initiated by the New York Civil Liberties Union on behalf of the Long Island Roller Rebels, a women’s roller derby team. Advocates described the decision as a victory for transgender rights, noting that the ban was an attempt to exclude individuals from public spaces based on gender identity.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman had previously defended the measure as a way to protect women from bullying. Following the ruling, Nassau County Attorney Thomas Adams stated that the county is reviewing the decision with the intention of continuing the appeals process.
