Nasuh Mahruki released after court sentence in Turkey

Nasuh Mahruki, the founder and former president of the search and rescue organization AKUT, has been released from detention following a court hearing in Istanbul.

Mahruki was facing charges of ‘inciting or insulting the public through hatred and enmity’ due to social media posts regarding the July 15 coup attempt. During his defense at the Bakırköy 57th Criminal Court of First Instance, Mahruki denied allegations that he described the coup attempt as a ‘theater’ or a ‘play,’ stating that his comments were intended to suggest there were signs the attempt was forthcoming.

The court sentenced Mahruki to one year in prison but decided to suspend the announcement of the verdict and ordered his immediate release. He had been in custody since July 17, 2026.
