Nataša Pirc Musar commemorates Primorska annexation

Slovenian President Nataša Pirc Musar delivered a speech in Lipica during the state holiday commemorating the annexation of Primorska to the motherland. She emphasized the importance of peace, solidarity, and equality, noting that current conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine serve as reminders of the fragile line between peace and violence.

Reflecting on history, the President highlighted the struggle for Slovenian identity, language, and rights. She noted that between the two World Wars, more than 300,000 Slovenians suffered under fascist violence and systematic de-nationalization. She described how fascist authorities attempted to erase the core of the community by Italianizing schools and closing hundreds of cultural, social, and economic institutions.

Musar also paid tribute to the poet Srečko Kosovel, describing his work as the voice of a generation that refused to accept injustice and the denial of their right to their own identity.
