Natal authorizes pet transport on public buses

The city of Natal has enacted Law No. 8.217/2026, which permits the transport of dogs and cats weighing up to 12 kilograms on the urban collective transport system. Sanctioned by Mayor Paulinho Freire, the law allows pets to travel without additional fares, provided owners adhere to specific safety and hygiene regulations.

Animals must be kept in appropriate, ventilated transport boxes that do not exceed 60 cm in length, 40 cm in width, and 36.5 cm in height. These containers must be lined with absorbent material and maintained in good hygienic condition. Owners are responsible for ensuring their pets do not cause discomfort, safety risks, or damage to other passengers.

To manage passenger flow, pet transport is prohibited during peak hours on weekdays, specifically from 5:00 to 9:00 and from 16:00 to 20:00. These restrictions, along with the weight and container requirements, do not apply to guide dogs or assistance animals, which remain governed by federal legislation. The municipal executive branch has up to 60 days to finalize the detailed regulations for the law.
