Natalie Imbruglia discusses financial struggles after Neighbours fame

Singer and former actress Natalie Imbruglia has shared details regarding a period of financial hardship following her departure from the Australian soap opera ‘Neighbours’. Speaking on the ‘Begin Again with Davina McCall’ podcast, the 51-year-old singer described the transition from fame to struggle as a “hard time” that occurred after she moved to the United Kingdom.

Imbruglia explained that her attempts to pursue an acting career in England were hindered by visa issues and industry restrictions regarding actors from ‘Neighbours’. During her years of popularity, she had relied on cash from public appearances and club visits, but once those opportunities ceased, she found herself without a clear plan or financial stability. This period led her to live in a basement in the Chelsea area of London.

Reflecting on the experience, Imbruglia noted that while the struggle was difficult, it was a necessary part of her personal growth. She stated that the drop in her profile and bank balance was “the best thing that ever happened to me,” as it forced her to experience a normal level of struggle. She eventually transitioned into a successful music career, most notably with her 1997 hit single ‘Torn’.
