Natalie Pawlik criticizes racism against Turkish people in Germany

Natalie Pawlik, the German government's integration commissioner, has criticized the ongoing racism and discrimination faced by Turkish people in Germany, even 65 years after the signing of the German-Turkish recruitment agreement.

Speaking ahead of a commemorative event in Berlin, Pawlik stated that individuals who must give “120 percent to be considered 100 percent” are not poorly integrated, but are being poorly treated. She noted that belonging is still frequently questioned in areas such as housing searches, job applications, and schools.

While acknowledging these challenges, Pawlik praised the contributions of Turkish migrants, noting they have helped build the German economy and shaped society for generations. She emphasized that modern integration efforts, such as language courses and professional qualification recognition, are much more robust than in the past, but called for the sustainable financing of these established structures.

The anniversary event in Berlin is expected to feature speeches from Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Turkish Ambassador Gökhan Turan, alongside discussions with representatives from the first generation of migrants and their descendants.
