Natalius Pigai: Papuans may demand rights but not independence
Human Rights Minister Natalius Pigai has stated that while the people of Papua are entitled to demand justice, welfare, and their constitutional rights, they are not permitted to demand independence from the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI). Speaking during a visit to the Central Papua Regional House of Representatives in Nabire, Pigai emphasized that advocating for prosperity and health is a fulfillment of the 1945 Constitution, provided such efforts are conducted through legal and constitutional channels.
Pigai also urged local leaders and security forces in Central Papua to adopt a humanist approach to maintaining security and governance. He stressed that government programs, including education, health, and free nutritious meals, must be implemented effectively to ensure they reach the community without being influenced by political interests. He encouraged evidence-based advocacy, noting that documented grievances can be processed through formal legal mechanisms to achieve binding court decisions.
