Natalius Pigai urges faster passage of human rights regulations

Human Rights Minister Natalius Pigai is calling for the accelerated processing of various regulations to strengthen the authority of the Ministry of Human Rights. During a visit to Sumedang, West Java, Pigai emphasized that a solid legal foundation is essential to carry out a ‘human rights revolution’ and take concrete actions.

Pigai noted that several proposals, including bills, presidential regulations, and presidential instructions, have been submitted to the Ministry of Law, the State Secretariat, and the House of Representatives (DPR RI). He highlighted the current inability to take decisive action against corporations suspected of human rights violations, stating he wishes to issue warnings or even revoke licenses for violators, but lacks the necessary legal mandate to do so.

Furthermore, the Minister pointed out that the current lack of legal basis limits the ministry’s ability to provide humanitarian assistance, particularly in conflict zones, as the use of state funds requires clear legal authorization. The ministry was established as a separate entity following the restructuring of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights in 2024.
