Nicaragua rejects U.S. ambassador nominee Natasha Franceschi
The Nicaraguan government, led by Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, has rejected the appointment of Natasha Franceschi as the new United States ambassador. The veto was confirmed by U.S. State Department officials during a meeting of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington.
Following the rejection, the OAS approved a consensus resolution demanding that Nicaragua release political prisoners, restore public liberties, and establish conditions for free and inclusive elections. The resolution also calls for the restoration of the separation of powers and the return of nationality to those stripped of it. To address the crisis, the OAS created a Ministerial Follow-up Group to seek direct dialogue with the Nicaraguan authorities and opposition sectors.
U.S. officials stated that the veto demonstrates the regime's lack of willingness to engage in serious diplomatic dialogue. The vacancy at the U.S. Embassy in Managua has persisted since May 2023. Meanwhile, Rosario Murillo has not directly addressed the OAS resolution, instead focusing on themes of sovereignty and spiritual strength in public communications.
