Nate Soares stops retirement savings due to AI existential risk

Nate Soares, president of the Machine Intelligence Research Institute (MIRI), has reportedly stopped contributing to his retirement savings due to concerns regarding artificial intelligence. Soares, a former Google and Microsoft engineer, stated in a podcast with The Atlantic that he has not contributed to his 401(k) for a decade.

Soares estimates there is a greater than 50 percent probability of an existential catastrophe caused by superintelligent AI within the next ten years. He expressed that the dangers posed by AI may exceed those of nuclear weapons because digital systems possess the capacity to self-improve and expand independently.

While Soares noted that he is working to prevent such an outcome and does not believe a catastrophe is inevitable, he warned that advanced systems could pursue goals that conflict with human survival. His views align with other researchers, such as Geoffrey Hinton and Evan Hubinger, who consider the risk of algorithmic takeover to be significant.
