Nathan Hochman hosts picnic at MacArthur Park to signal safety improvements

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman fulfilled a pledge made in June to host a picnic at MacArthur Park during the Labor Day weekend. The move was intended to demonstrate improved public safety in the area, which has long struggled with gang activity, homelessness, and open drug use.

Hochman stated that he would only return to the park with his family and colleagues once he felt it was safe enough to do so. He credited the progress to the combined efforts of law enforcement, including increased police patrols, and various community organizations. While acknowledging that the park still faces significant challenges, Hochman noted that recent enforcement actions have helped send a message that the space is becoming safer for families.

The park has faced a reputation for crime dating back decades, with high rates of drug-related activity involving substances like fentanyl. The District Attorney's presence at the park follows a series of multi-agency raids aimed at curbing criminal activity in the vicinity.
