Nathan Matthews, Colorado firefighter, dies from Knowles Fire burnover

U.S. Wildland Fire Service firefighter Nathan Matthews, 43, of Lincoln, Nebraska, died on July 24 after being severely burned in a burnover on June 27 while battling the Knowles Fire near the Colorado‑Utah border. Matthews was assigned to the Rifle Helitack crew. He was the fourth firefighter to die in the incident; three others – Emily Barker, Nick Hutcherson and Sydney Watson – died at the scene. A serious accident investigation team continues to examine the circumstances of the burnover.

The Knowles Fire later merged with nearby fires to become the Snyder Fire, which burned roughly 30,200 acres before being contained around July 8. Matthews’ death marks the fifth wildland firefighter fatality in Colorado this year, adding to the July 12 death of Canadian helicopter pilot Nicholas Dale. Colorado Governor Jared Polis announced that flags would fly at half‑staff on the day of Matthews’ memorial.
