Nathan Owen jailed for fabricated Jaguar brake‑failure chase
Nathan Owen, a 33‑year‑old from Prestatyn, North Wales, deliberately claimed that his electric Jaguar I‑Pace suffered a brake failure in order to avoid repaying a car‑finance agreement. On 6 March 2024 he called emergency services saying the vehicle was accelerating out of his control, while the car was actually stationary. Police pursued him on the M58, M57 and M62, where he drove at speeds of up to 86‑90 mph for about 35 minutes, covering roughly 38 miles and colliding with a police car 31 times. The chase forced temporary motorway closures. Investigations found no fault with the Jaguar. At Liverpool Crown Court Judge Ian Unsworth sentenced Owen to four years and three months in prison for endangering the public and fabricating the incident. The court heard he was in arrears of about £5,000 on a finance deal with CA Auto Finance UK Ltd and had unsuccessfully sought additional credit from Plata.
