National Academies committee to study extreme weather attribution

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine has formed an ad hoc committee to examine the scientific understanding of extreme weather event attribution and its connection to climate change. The study aims to assess how human-caused climate change alters the frequency and intensity of events such as heat waves and extreme rainfall.

The committee will evaluate the utility of attribution science for management decisions, adaptation planning, and risk assessment. Key objectives include examining methodologies for rapid attribution, assessing the maturity of predictive probabilistic forecasts, and providing guidance on extending these scientific applications to regions with data gaps or limited research capacity.
