National Academies to study sickle cell disease management

An ad hoc committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is launching a study to review current research and science regarding the management and treatment of sickle cell disease (SCD). The goal is to produce a report addressing best practices and community experiences.

The study will examine the healthcare landscape for both adults and children, including the efficacy and side effects of traditional and alternative therapies. It will also detail the course of acute sickle cell crises, including symptoms, complications, and functional impacts.

Additionally, the committee will investigate hospitalization patterns, such as factors influencing admission and readmission rates, and the use of parenteral narcotic pain medications for managing pain crises. The report aims to identify how best practices and clinical considerations have evolved over the last decade.
