National Academy of Medicine partners with YouTube to label reliable health content

The U.S. National Academy of Medicine (NAM) worked with YouTube from 2020 to 2023 to create an independent working group that set criteria for identifying high‑quality health information on the platform. YouTube funded the effort but kept the committee autonomous, and introduced a label that marks videos sourced from credible health authorities. The label has been applied to millions of videos in multiple languages, reaching over a thousand billion views.

In Italy, health‑literacy experts are calling for greater transparency of digital health data. Enrica Giorgetti, president of the Fondazione MSD and former head of Farmindustria, stressed that trustworthy online sources are essential for authentic health literacy, especially as AI‑generated misinformation expands. She urged clearer standards and public‑sector collaboration to rebuild confidence in science after the pandemic.
