National Agency for Public Health warns of malaria infection risk

The National Agency for Public Health (ANSP) has issued a warning regarding the risk of malaria infection, urging citizens to take preventive measures against mosquito bites. This advisory follows reports of malaria cases at Frankfurt Airport in Germany, where six cases of tropical malaria were recorded among employees, including two deaths.

Health authorities stated that travelers and those transiting through international airports should not panic, as such incidents can occur due to the accidental introduction of infected Anopheles mosquitoes via air transport. While the risk to the general population in the Republic of Moldova is currently considered low and no local transmission has been reported, the country remains malaria-free but continues to see imported cases from travelers returning from endemic regions.

To reduce risk, the ANSP recommends that travelers to endemic areas research local risks, consult doctors regarding antimalarial prophylaxis, and use repellents, protective clothing, and mosquito nets. Individuals experiencing fever or other suggestive symptoms after returning from travel are advised to seek medical assistance immediately and inform their physician of their recent travel history.
