National Archaeological Museum expansion approved in Athens

The final designs for the expansion and modernization of the National Archaeological Museum in Athens have received unanimous approval from Greece’s two primary advisory bodies: the Central Council of Modern Monuments (KSNM) and the Central Archaeological Council (KAS).

The comprehensive project, led by architect David Chipperfield in collaboration with the Greek firm Tombazis and Associates, encompasses architectural, structural, landscape, and lighting designs, as well as museological and exhibition planning. The scope includes the entire city block and the Epigraphic Museum.

The studies were funded by a €40 million sponsorship from Spyros and Dorothy Latsis, following a ratification by the Hellenic Parliament in April 2024. Culture Minister Lina Mendoni described the project as a ‘strategic investment in culture.’

Architect David Chipperfield noted that the design aims to balance the museum’s role as a global tourist destination with its fundamental service to the local community and the city of Athens, ensuring the collection is presented in an optimal manner for both international visitors and Greek citizens.
