National Archives faces petition over loss of public duties
A group of organizations, including Inholland University of Applied Sciences and the Committee 30 June-1 July The Hague, has launched an online petition to oppose the planned termination of public duties at the National Archives in The Hague.
The National Archives intends to shift its focus exclusively toward making government information accessible. This transition would result in the cessation of public-facing activities such as exhibitions, independent publications, and historical research. Additionally, the institution plans to stop taking over private archives from organizations like the Red Cross, KNVB, COC, and the 1940-1945 Foundation.
The National Archives stated these decisions are necessary due to digitalization, limited financial resources, and the upcoming Archives Act, which takes effect on January 1, 2027. Petitioners argue that these changes threaten collective memory and essential resources for genealogical research, academic theses, and educational programs.
