National Art Center, Tokyo to host ‘Diva’ exhibition in 2027
The ‘Diva’ exhibition, organized by London’s Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), is scheduled to be held at the National Art Center, Tokyo, from March 24 to July 19, 2027. This event marks the final stop of a global tour that has visited five countries.
The exhibition explores the history and evolving concept of the ‘diva’ from the 19th century to the present day, examining the cultural significance and social influence of approximately 100 performers across opera, stage, film, and popular music. It highlights how these artists have challenged social norms, gender equality, and prejudice through their creative expression.
The exhibition is divided into two main acts: ‘The Birth of the Diva,’ focusing on 19th-century opera singers and Hollywood stars, and ‘The Rebirth/Resurrection of the Diva,’ which examines the impact of performers on social liberation and diversity movements from the 1960s to the modern era. Featured artists include figures such as Maria Callas, Marilyn Monroe, Aretha Franklin, Madonna, Lady Gaga, and Adele. The display will include approximately 280 items, including 60 rare costumes worn by iconic performers.
