National Assembly Speaker Jo Jeong-sik visits Sejong to support administrative capital
National Assembly Speaker Jo Jeong-sik visited Sejong City to inspect the planned site for the National Assembly Sejong Office Building. During a meeting with Sejong Mayor Jo Sang-ho and the second National Assembly Sejong Office Building Construction Committee, Jo emphasized that establishing an administrative capital is a ‘historical necessity’ to address national issues such as overcrowding in the Seoul metropolitan area and regional imbalance.
Mayor Jo Sang-ho stated that the construction of the Sejong office building is the starting point for completing a functional administrative capital where politics and administration are closely linked. He called for the enactment of a Special Act on the Administrative Capital within the year and the eventual codification of the administrative capital status in the Constitution to secure Sejong's legal standing.
Officials reported that the construction of the National Assembly Sejong Office Building is targeted to begin in 2029, with completion expected by 2033. The project aims to integrate the presidential Sejong office, the National Assembly building, and public spaces into a national symbolic zone.
