National Awakening Day highlights coma rehabilitation needs
The 28th National Day for Awakening Research and the 12th European Awakening Day are being observed on October 7. Under the theme ‘It is worth it’, the campaign aims to raise awareness regarding the rights and needs of individuals recovering from coma and Acquired Severe Brain Injury (ASBI), as well as their families.
Promoted by the Fondazione Gli Amici di Luca, the initiative emphasizes the necessity of a coordinated response to support patients from the acute phase through rehabilitation and reintegration into society. In Ferrara, the Unit for Severe Brain Injuries at the Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria di Ferrara serves as a regional hub for the Gracer network, providing personalized interventions for patients with severe brain damage for over 40 years.
The campaign highlights the complexity of recovery, noting that awakening does not always mean the end of medical care. Patients may continue to face Disorders of Consciousness (DoC), including Non-Responsive Wakefulness Syndrome and Minimally Conscious State, which require ongoing motor, cognitive, and communicative support.
