National Bank of Moldova shifts reserves to euro
The National Bank of Moldova (BNM) has reported savings of approximately 11 million euros following a strategic shift in its foreign exchange reserves. Starting January 1, 2025, the central bank began a gradual transition to restructure its reserves from US dollars to euros.
Governor Anca Dragu stated that this decision aligns with the changing structure of Moldova's economy, noting that approximately 70% of the country's financial flows and 65–70% of its imports and exports are now directed toward the European Union.
Currently, Moldova's foreign exchange reserves stand at approximately 5 billion euros, covering five to six months of imports. This level exceeds the traditional benchmark of three to four months. Dragu noted that the bank maintains a floating exchange rate regime and intervenes in the market only to mitigate sudden shocks.
