National Bank of Moldova reports resilient financial system in Q2 2026
The National Bank of Moldova (BNM) reported that the country's financial system maintained adequate resilience at the end of the second quarter of 2026, with no signs of systemic risk or excessive vulnerability. The financial stress index stood at 0.39, well below the established threshold of 0.51, indicating normal operating conditions.
In the banking sector, vulnerability levels were recorded at -0.34, suggesting an absence of accumulated systemic risks. The risk of direct contagion is considered low, as most interbank placements are held in foreign banks, and the interbank network shows no signs of systemic tension. Additionally, no significant sectoral credit concentration was identified.
Regarding lending trends, banks have tightened credit standards for both companies and individuals despite an increase in credit demand. New mortgage loans decreased by 5.5% compared to the same period in 2025 and by 22.9% compared to the previous quarter, totaling 2,951.8 million MDL. Conversely, new consumer loans rose by 16.2% year-on-year and 20.7% compared to the previous quarter, reaching 5,119.7 million MDL. The risk profile for individual debtors remains prudent, with the majority of new loans maintaining healthy debt-to-income ratios.
