National Bank of Poland faces management crisis amid leadership impasse
The National Bank of Poland (NBP) is facing a potential governance crisis due to a political deadlock between President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Donald Tusk regarding the appointment of new board members.
With the upcoming end of Vice President Adam Lipiński’s term, the NBP board risks falling below the statutory minimum of six members. To mitigate this, President Glapiński has assumed direct supervision over the Education and Publishing and Finance departments, which were previously overseen by Lipiński.
President Duda has submitted several candidates for countersignature by the Prime Minister, including Ludwik Kotecki, Przemysław Litwiniuk, Marcin Zarzecki, and Marta Kightley. However, the lack of agreement between the presidency and the government has stalled these appointments. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Tusk is considering various legal and political responses to Glapiński’s leadership, including the possibility of bringing the NBP President before the State Tribunal on allegations of unauthorized financial and political actions.
