National Bank of Romania issues commemorative 100-lei banknote

The National Bank of Romania (BNR) is issuing a commemorative 100-lei polymer banknote to mark the 190th anniversary of the birth of Eugeniu Carada, one of the bank's founders.

A limited edition of 16,000 banknotes will be released for numismatic collectors. While the banknote carries a legal tender value of 100 lei within Romania, it is being sold in collector packages for 240 lei, including VAT and a descriptive leaflet in Romanian, English, and French.

The banknote features a blue color scheme and dimensions identical to the standard 100-lei note currently in circulation. The obverse displays a portrait and signature of Eugeniu Carada (1836–1910), alongside a stylized element inspired by the first 20-lei note issued by the BNR in 1881. The central motif depicts the teller hall of the National Bank of Romania's old palace, accompanied by an eagle and a shield featuring the central bank's logo. Security features include a transparent window, a magnetic security thread with microtext, and color-shifting ink.
