National Bank of Serbia ensures foreign currency and gold stability
The National Bank of Serbia (NBS) has issued several measures and statements to ensure the stability of the country's financial system and foreign exchange market. Addressing media reports regarding potential shortages, the NBS confirmed that authorized exchange offices have sufficient supplies of euros and dinars. In October, exchange offices saw a net sale of 56.3 million euros, successfully meeting increased citizen demand. To maintain market liquidity, the NBS Executive Board extended the deadline for exchange offices and postal operators to return foreign currency purchased from banks from 15 to 30 days, a measure effective until December 10, 2026.
Additionally, NBS Governor Jorgovanka Tabaković highlighted that Serbia's gold reserves have reached a record 55.3 tons, with a market value exceeding 6.4 billion euros. This represents approximately 21.6 percent of the country's total gross foreign exchange reserves. Tabaković noted that increasing gold reserves is a long-term strategy to ensure economic sovereignty and stability amidst global financial uncertainty. The bank has also focused on purchasing gold from domestic sources, acquiring 2.6 tons from local production between early 2026 and September.
