National Bank of Serbia meets EU experts on central bank independence
Jorgovanka Tabaković, Governor of the National Bank of Serbia (NBS), met with an expert mission from the European Commission’s TAIEX (Technical Assistance and Information Exchange) initiative. The mission aims to support Serbia’s alignment with EU standards regarding Chapter 17, which covers economic and monetary policy, specifically focusing on strengthening the legal and institutional frameworks that ensure central bank independence.
The TAIEX mission includes international experts such as Klaas Knot, former Governor of the Dutch Central Bank and Chair of the Financial Stability Board. Tabaković emphasized the NBS's commitment to applying the highest standards of independence, noting that a strong legal framework must be supported by the professional integrity of individuals within the institution.
In parallel, representatives from the National Convention on the European Union (NKEU) held discussions with the delegation. They raised concerns regarding the potential consequences of insufficient institutional distance and transparency in NBS decision-making. The NKEU highlighted risks related to political influence, which could impact inflation control credibility, SME financing, and the long-term stability of the dinar exchange rate.
