National Book Foundation announces 77th National Book Awards longlists

The National Book Foundation has announced the longlists for the 77th National Book Awards, spanning categories including Fiction, Poetry, Translated Literature, and Young People’s Literature. The awards recognize books published by U.S. publishers, with specific residency or citizenship requirements for most categories, though Translated Literature has no such restrictions.

Notable longlisted authors include Senegalese novelist Mohamed Mbougar Sarr for ‘Pure Men’ in the Translated Literature category, and Egyptian writer Abdelrahman ElGendy for his memoir ‘Huna: A Memoir of Revolution, Prison, and Becoming’ in Nonfiction. Delali Adjoa is also recognized in the Young People’s Literature category for ‘The Free Verse Society’.

The Fiction longlist features works by authors such as Hannah Lillith Assadi, Edwidge Danticat, and Louise Erdrich. The Poetry longlist includes collections by Victoria Chang and Fady Joudah, while the Translated Literature category includes works translated from languages such as Arabic, Chinese, French, and Russian.
