National Breastfeeding Month celebrated with community health initiatives

August marks National Breastfeeding Month, highlighting the nutritional and immunological benefits of breastfeeding for infants. Medical experts note that breast milk, particularly colostrum, provides essential antibodies that help protect newborns from respiratory, ear, and intestinal infections, as well as SIDS and childhood obesity.

In Tennessee, the Knox County Health Department’s Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program and the East Tennessee Breastfeeding Coalition are hosting a community celebration on August 25 at the Knoxville Museum of Art. The event aims to support expecting and nursing mothers through various activities and displays from community partners like UT Medical Center and Catholic Charities.

Health coordinators emphasize the need for increased community and employer support to help maintain breastfeeding rates, which often decline when mothers return to the workforce.
