National Cheongju Marine Science Museum opens in Cheongju

The National Cheongju Marine Science Museum has officially opened in Cheongju, marking the first national marine cultural facility established in the landlocked Chungcheongbuk-do province. Built with an investment of 98.3 billion won, the facility spans a total floor area of 14,980 square meters across three floors and one basement level.

The museum is designed around the theme ‘Ocean seen through science, the future found in the ocean.’ It features several specialized zones, including a Future Marine Observatory that addresses climate change, ocean pollution, and resource depletion. A digital aquarium provides immersive views of marine life ranging from the surface of the East Sea to the deep Pacific Ocean, while a dedicated children’s marine experience center offers educational play regarding ocean waste and conservation.

The opening follows years of regional efforts to secure a national marine facility. The museum aims to serve as a hub for marine education in inland regions, offering customized programs for infants and elementary students to foster interest in marine science and environmental stewardship.
