National Children's Hospital in Vietnam expands pediatric organ transplant capabilities
The National Children's Hospital in Vietnam is advancing its pediatric organ transplant programs, moving from successful liver and kidney transplants toward goals of transplanting hearts, lungs, and intestines. While medical professionals have mastered complex techniques over the past 20 years, the hospital faces significant challenges due to a scarcity of suitable donor organs.
Pediatric transplantation is noted for its high complexity, as the small anatomical structures of children make connecting blood vessels and ducts difficult. Additionally, patients often face risks from malnutrition and weakened immune systems. Despite these hurdles, recent successes include a kidney transplant from a brain-dead donor in early 2025 and various successful liver transplants from living donors.
To address the shortage of organs and enhance specialized techniques, the hospital is collaborating with Viet Duc University Hospital. This partnership aims to improve outcomes for children suffering from end-stage organ failure, congenital biliary atresia, and other critical conditions.
