National City mayoral candidates debate budget deficit and personal finances
National City mayoral candidates Jose Rodriguez and Marcus Bush are facing intense scrutiny as the election approaches, centered on the city’s $13 million structural deficit and personal financial controversies.
During a recent forum, Rodriguez accused Bush of being unfit for office, citing public records that include a recent home foreclosure, an unpaid traffic ticket, and approximately $3,500 in unreimbursed travel costs. Bush, who serves on the Metropolitan Transportation System governing board, acknowledged recent financial struggles but characterized the attacks as a sign of desperation from his opponent. City Manager Doug Schulze confirmed that Bush has begun repaying the travel costs through an installment plan.
The candidates also sparred over how to address the city’s $90 million budget. Rodriguez advocated for a proposed business license tax that could generate up to $7 million in annual revenue. Bush opposed the immediate implementation of the tax, arguing for more engagement with local businesses and a focus on reining in city spending. Without new revenue, city officials warned that services such as the library, public swimming pool, and the George H. Waters Nutrition Center could face cuts.
