National Coalition Party sets boundaries for Finnish election coalitions

The National Coalition Party (Kokoomus) has signaled its strategic direction ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections in Finland. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo stated in Salo that his party would not enter a government coalition with any party that does not accept the debt brake, a move seen as excluding the Left Alliance.

Jukka Kopra, chair of the National Coalition Party parliamentary group, further highlighted fundamental disagreements between the National Coalition Party and the Social Democratic Party (SDP). Kopra identified four key areas of divergence: taxation, public finance stabilization, defense funding, and national security.

Specifically, Kopra criticized the SDP's approach to fiscal policy, opposing their proposals to increase taxes on labor, entrepreneurship, and capital to fund public spending. He also rejected the SDP's suggestion of a separate defense tax, arguing that defense is a core state function that should be managed through budget prioritization rather than new taxes.
