National Coming Out Day commemorates LGBTQ+ visibility

National Coming Out Day is observed globally on October 11 to promote visibility, respect, and the protection of rights for the LGBTQ+ community. The initiative originated in the United States following a massive march in Washington for Gay and Lesbian Rights held in 1987, which drew over 500,000 participants.

Key historical milestones associated with the movement include the presentation of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, a large-scale tribute to those lost to HIV/AIDS. The day was championed by activists Robert Eichberg and Jean O’Leary to foster awareness and support. Today, global organizations such as the Human Rights Campaign continue to lead efforts to promote the message of visibility among community members and their allies.
