National Coming Out Day highlights television representation milestones
In observance of National Coming Out Day on October 11, various television milestones have been highlighted that shaped LGBTQ+ representation in media.
Key historical moments include the 1972 introduction of Peter Panama on the ABC sitcom ‘The Corner Bar’, which featured one of the first recurring gay characters on American television. In British television, ‘Brookside’ featured Gordon Collins, recognized as the first openly gay character in a UK soap opera, and aired the first pre-watershed lesbian kiss in 1994. Additionally, ‘Coronation Street’ provided significant representation through the character Hayley Cropper, who shared her transgender identity with Roy Cropper in 1988.
