National Commission for Safai Karamcharis approves compensation for 1,223 sanitation worker deaths

The National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK) has approved compensation for 1,223 families following deaths in sewers and septic tanks across the country. This decision follows a total of 1,377 recorded cases of such fatalities.

During the celebration of the NCSK’s 33rd foundation day in New Delhi, Minister of State for Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, emphasized the need to eliminate dangerous manual cleaning practices. He advocated for the widespread use of machinery for sewer and septic tank cleaning to ensure human safety and dignity.

Meghwal stated that the national goal must be to achieve zero dangerous manual entry and zero fatalities in septic tanks through full mechanization. He also stressed the importance of providing sanitation workers with proper training, safety equipment, social security, and timely rehabilitation.
