National Film Archive of Japan to honor Kenji Mizoguchi

The National Film Archive of Japan (NFAJ) and the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) will co-host a special program titled ‘TIFF/NFAJ Classics: Kenji Mizoguchi’ to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the director's death.

The program, scheduled for October 27 to November 1, 2026, will feature 13 works by Mizoguchi, many of which have been recently digitally restored. All screenings will include English subtitles. A highlight of the event is the domestic premiere of the digitally restored version of ‘Takino Shiraito’ (1933), which will be presented with a traditional benshi narrator and musical accompaniment.

A related exhibition, ‘70 Years Since Death: Film Director Kenji Mizoguchi,’ will be held at the National Film Archive of Japan from August 11 to December 13, 2026.
