National Gallery hosts Renoir and Love exhibition
The National Gallery is hosting ‘Renoir and Love’, an exhibition featuring 45 works created during the artist’s crucial two decades between the mid-1860s and mid-1880s. The collection explores Renoir’s evolution in capturing modern life, moving from sombre early self-portraits to a brighter palette and looser brushwork.
A centerpiece of the UK debut is the 1876 masterpiece ‘Dance at the Moulin de la Galette’. The exhibition examines various forms of human connection depicted in his work, including romantic, maternal, platonic, and social bonds.
Renoir’s career was defined by his ability to interpret light and color through scenes of contemporary social gatherings. Even in his final years, while suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, he remained dedicated to his craft, famously noting that ‘the pain passes, but the beauty remains.’
