National Gas begins design for St Fergus to Teesside hydrogen pipeline

National Gas has entered the engineering design phase for the second phase of Project Union, a proposed hydrogen pipeline intended to connect St Fergus in Scotland to Teesside in England. The 563km (350-mile) project is part of a broader vision to create a 2,414km national hydrogen network across Great Britain.

The initiative aims to link industrial clusters, storage sites, and power stations to facilitate a low-carbon hydrogen economy. By repurposing sections of the existing 8,000km National Transmission System, the network is designed to supply hydrogen to hard-to-electrify sectors, including steel production, chemicals, and heavy manufacturing. It is also expected to support the production of ammonia and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

This phase involves preliminary engineering and planning to define technical requirements, assess risks, and produce cost estimates. National Gas has appointed several specialist suppliers, including WSP for routing and Fisher German for land services, to support the development of this clean-energy corridor.
