National Geographic announces ‘LION’ documentary series

National Geographic has announced ‘LION’, a four-part natural history documentary series filmed over four years in Kenya’s Maasai Mara. The series follows the journey of a lion cub named Kio as he matures from a vulnerable cub into a leader of his pride.

Executive produced by Jon Favreau and Mike Gunton, the production involved nearly 1,400 filming days and utilized local Kenyan filmmakers. The series features an original score led by Academy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer and is narrated by O. J. Lynch.

Beyond the central narrative of Kio, the series highlights the critical roles of lionesses in hunting, nurturing, and protecting the pride. Filmmaker Faith Musembi noted that the series provides a perspective on the collective leadership and essential labor performed by female lions.
