National Geographic captures emperor penguin chicks jumping from ice platforms
A National Geographic film crew has captured drone footage of emperor penguin chicks jumping from an ice platform approximately 15 meters high into the freezing waters of Antarctica.
The footage was recorded on the Ekström Ice Shelf, home to a colony of about 20,000 emperor penguins, as part of a two-year expedition led by explorer Bertie Gregory. The team spent 274 days filming for the documentary series ‘Secrets of the Penguins’, narrated by Blake Lively.
Scientists note that while emperor penguins typically raise chicks on floating ice, some colonies are now establishing themselves on ice platforms. This shift may offer less vulnerability to melting caused by rising temperatures, though environmental changes remain a threat to the species. The expedition also documented hybrid penguin chicks and a colony of African penguins.
